Absence and Illness
We are required to distinguish between 'authorised absence' (because of illness or another valid reason) and 'unauthorised absence' (where there is no valid reason for the absence, the school has not been informed of a reason, or the absence has not been previously agreed with the school.)
Levels of authorised and unauthorised absence must be reported to the LA and are reported publicly in school prospectuses and performance tables. Where a child has repeated unauthorised absences, this may be notified to Education Welfare Services as a cause for concern.
Absence From School
It is essential that we are informed when a child is to be absent. If a child fails to arrive at school with no message being received, we will be concerned that something may have happened to him or her on the way to school, and it is then our policy to contact home or an emergency contact to establish the whereabouts of the child. It is most important, therefore, that parents contact us (before 9.15am if possible) on the first day of absence. We cannot accept the word of another child/brother/sister. It is helpful if parents send a note upon the child's return, explaining the reason for the absence.
Please do not send poorly children to school! While we do not want to discourage good attendance, it is distressing for children to come to school when they are not well, and we do not have the staff or facilities to care properly for sick children. If a child becomes unwell at school, we will look after them until a parent or friend can come. Many childhood illnesses are very infectious or contagious and will quickly spread around the school. Children with such illnesses should be kept at home until there is no further risk of infection spreading - your doctor will be able to advise you about this. Children who have been sick should not return to school until they have been clear of sickness for at least 12 hours.
Accidents
Accidents inevitable happen from time to time. We have a number of staff with first-aid qualifications, and children who have an accident will be well cared for. Minor injuries will be treated in school. Where an injury is more serious and may need treatment by a doctor, we will contact parents so that they can arrange this. In extreme emergencies, or when a parent or relative cannot be contacted, we will ensure that children receive proper treatment, accompanied by a member or staff.
